My mum is a huge advocate of anything organic, herbal, natural, eco-friendly and believes in being kind to yourself. In my childhood this translated into meals consisting of soya mince (yuck) and using arnica or lavender oil to fix anything. In my adulthood, and now motherhood, this has made me very aware of what my family eats and the products we use.
Good organic food today is relatively easy to find as most supermarkets have an organic aisle and products are clearly labelled. However, I find it a bit more of a challenge to find body and beauty care products and identify how much of the product is truly ‘organic’.
With this in mind, I was thrilled to have discovered a brand, Green People, which is the leader in certified organic body care products. It was started by a mum who wanted to help her 2-year-old daughter suffering from eczema and allergies and took a more ‘natural’ approach.
I am often surprised at parents ignorance regarding the contents of baby products. Many baby wipe products, for example, are packed with hard-to-pronounce ingredients that I would not consider putting near my face, let alone my daughter’s bum. Even if your child does not have sensitive skin or allergies, their skin is so delicate and the most natural products are by far the most gentle.
Green People products are not tested on animals and are free from Sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate, parabens, lanolin, phthalates, propylene glycol, alcohol (ethyl alcohol, ethanol), harsh foaming agents, synthetic fragrances, irritating emulsifiers, PABA-sunscreen, petrochemicals, colourants, urea, DEA, TEA or PEG’S.
The first of the products I have been trying is the Lavender Baby Wash and Shampoo is wonderful. It lathers up really well and no need to worry about it irritating your child’s eyes as it is all natural. It contains aloe vera, chamomile, yucca, mandarin and lavender and it smells fantastic (I’ve even used it myself). There is also a No Scent Baby Wash & Shampoo available and the product is 83% certified organic.
The second product I’ve been testing and is almost finished (!) is the multiple award winning Mum & Baby Rescue Balm. This the all-natural and lanonlin- and paraben-free version of the popular Eight Hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden. It works fast on dry skin and I’ve used it on lips, elbows, knees, hands and as an all-over after bath massage lotion on my daughter. It is 91% certified organic and contains shea butter, hemp, beeswax and calendula.
My only feedback for this great green company is to please make the Mum & Rescue Balm in a smaller, handbag size for us Glam Mums.
These baby beauty products are now a staple in my home and I look forward to trying out their other ranges suited to the rest of the family.
